Light On Light Through

You'll hear a little of this and lot of that on Light On Light Through - my reviews of great television series and movies, my interviews with authors and creative media people and their interviews of me, my media theory and political commentary, thoughts about my favorite cars and food and space travel, discussions of my music, and a few of my readings from my science fiction stories. In the first years, starting in 2006, I put up a new episode at least once a month.  More recently, it became more or less often than once a month, usually less often.  But in the Summer of 2020, I began getting more in the mood to podcast, and on 17 October 2023, I began publishing a new episode of the podcast every Tuesday at 12:01 pm -- a minute after Noon (New York time).  - Paul Levinson

My Four Rules: The Best You Can Do To Make It As A Writer

Aug 26, 2007

What follows are my four cardinal rules for making it as a writer.  Never any guarantees - but if you follow these rules, you'll be giving yourself the best possible chance:

  1. Don't think about an idea for a story or an article too long - just write it.  As far as the world is concerned, an unwritten idea doesn't exist, and might not have even been thought, in the first place.
  2. Finish what you start writing.  As far as the world is concerned, an unfinished piece of writing doesn't exist, and might not have even been written, in the first place.
  3. Email, mail, or otherwise send out to a potential publisher whatever you finish writing. Or publish it yourself. As far as the world is concerned, a piece of writing that only you and your friends and family but no one else knows about might not have even been written, in the first place.
  4. If the publisher or editor turns your story down, send it right out to another publisher or editor - there will always be another one. Or publish it yourself. As far as the world is concerned, an unpublished piece of writing might not have even been written-

Well, you get the picture.  I hope this helps...

PS - It has been pointed out that the above four rules bear a strong resemblance to Robert Heinlein's five rules - which they do.  My rules emphasize the new importance of self-publishing, which I think is becoming even more significant than traditional publishing in the 21st century. And my rules try to address the psychological situations of writers.  But, clearly, they are indebted to Helnlein's.

Ah-ha. Simple but true. Why is it that so few writers are willing to help aspiring writers? Probably because so few aspiring writers are willing to accept advice (or criticism). Both sides of the coin are crucial, eh?

Yes, indeed, Sarah ...

By the way, I love the title of your book! Best of luck with it!

These are encouraging thoughts indeed, thanks for posting the link to the Facebook Aspiring Authors community. I\'m an aspiring novelist myself quite close to finishing my first novel, and I\'m hellbent on finding an agent and getting published within this year if it kills me, staking a lot of what this work means to me. I\'ve put years and countless hours into this book, poured my heart and soul into the story, and its completion looming overhead, thoughts of facing the hunt for an agent and publisher are quite daunting.

Stay strong, Benjamin. You\'ve created something new in the cosmos - let it dictate to the world around you, rather than vice versa.
