Light On Light Through

You'll hear a little of this and lot of that on Light On Light Through - my reviews of great television series, my interviews with authors and creative media people and their interviews of me, my political commentary, thoughts about my favorite cars and food and space travel, discussions of my music, and a few of my readings from my science fiction stories. These are usually audio and a few are video.  In the first years, starting in 2006, I put up a new episode at least once a month.  More recently, it became more or less often than once a month, usually a lot less often.  But in the Fall of 2018, I began getting more in the mood to podcast, and you can expect new episodes now a little more frequently.  - Paul Levinson

Hats Off to Dan Rather

Sep 20, 2007

Dan Rather is suing CBS for $70 million and he is 100% justified. Instead of standing by its reporter, after its own two-member panel could not say that the report Rather went on the air with was false, CBS hung Rather out to dry. In so doing, CBS damaged Rather's reputation and his potential for future employment.  And it damaged its own reputation and its legacy even more.

CBS just celebrated its 80th anniversary the other day. William Paley must be turning over in his grave about CBS did to Dan Rather. His law suit is a small way of rectifying that.

Meanwhile, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric draws fewer viewers than it did with Rather.

almost twelve years ago

You know, when news of Dan Rather\\\'s lawsuit against CBS was made public, the blogs were all over the story and most of the e-mails said the same thing. \\\"Dan, you\\\'re done. You should just retire and shut up.\\\" \\\"You were wrong. Get over it and move on.\\\" \\\"You were never liked to begin with, Dan.\\\" Etcetra and so on.

Aren\\\'t we forgetting that President Bush\\\'s own military record is spotty at best? And perhaps questionable at worst? Well, if it wasn\\\'t questioned before, it should be now. Especially at a time when the government lied about the WMDs in Iraq. Especially when there seems to be no progress in the war. And certainly when almost 4000 of our troops have been killed and more than 20,000 wounded.

You have to remember that the people in this administration who set out to start this war had little or no military experience to speak of. Mr. Bush was in The Texas Air National Guard and then disappeared for about a month to who knows where and was later discharged. He never went to Vietnam. Neither did Dick Cheney. Or Donald Rumsfeld. Or Paul Wolfowitz. Or John Ashcroft. Or most of the conservative pundits on TV and radio.

Dan Rather has every right in the world to sue the brass at CBS. They\\\'ve always been uneasy about anyone challenging this President. And if you don\\\'t believe that, have you seen Katie Couric\\\'s recent visit to Iraq? My God, she was repeating almost the same things that Bush was saying about this quagmire.

Rather was a journalistic genius compared to Cheerleader Couric. Considering how we\\\'re losing the war---and who can deny THAT?---I think it\\\'s time we started finding out about President\\\'s own military service. Once we find that out, then we\\\'ll know WHY we\\\'re losing the war.
